This course will give you a solid foundation of knowledge to progress to higher education in a teaching-related subject.

Course details

Overview

This course is for people that would like to study on a Higher Education programme in Teaching or Education but need to gain the required entry qualifications and skills.

Access programmes entail 13 hours of direct contact time in addition to a minimum of 13 hours independent study.

What's covered?

You will study a range of different units across the programme, some focusing on your academic skills and some more subject specific, such as:

  • Valuing diversity
  • Language development
  • Developmental psychology
  • Supporting Work in the classroom
  • Independent research
  • Assessment Methods and Resources for Teaching
  • Education Studies

How will my work be assessed?

Your work will be assessed by a mixture of assessment methods which could include coursework, presentations and examinations.

What can I do after this?

You can progress to higher education programmes at university or college, including our BA (Hons) Early Years degree programme at University Centre Southend.

  • GCSE English at C or 4 grade or above, or equivalent (literacy at Level 2, such as Functional Skills, Learn direct etc.) – Evidence of this will be required during the application cycle
  • As part of the interview process, you will also need to complete a short paper-based assessment in English
  • Ideally you should already have GCSE maths at C or 4 grade or above, or equivalent (numeracy at Level 2), however if you do not have this, please contact the College to discuss your options.
Many universities require GCSE maths and English rather than an equivalent. It is your responsibility to begin checking which qualifications you require with the university or college you wish to progress to.
  • You will need to obtain a work placement in a primary or secondary school to complete the course successfully. This can be a voluntary placement and for one day a week. Work placements within an educational setting will require an enhanced DBS check
