Recruitment process
We aim to make our recruitment process as simple as possible. Due to the nature of our work with children and vulnerable adults, there are some Safer Recruitment principles that we must adhere to. Here you will find details of how to apply for a vacancy and the recruitment process.
Application
The first stage of applying for a vacancy is to complete the online application associated with your chosen vacancy; you will need to complete a separate application for each role you apply for. We are unable to accept speculative CVs due to Safer Recruitment requirements.
As part of the process, you will need to complete a supporting statement, which should address how you meet each criterion in the person specification. This is a key part of your application and is used to shortlist applications for interview. You may wish to work on this in a separate document and paste it into the online application. Your application details will be saved, allowing you to log out and return later to complete your application.
Shortlisting
Once the closing date of a vacancy has passed, the recruiting manager will shortlist candidates for an interview. We aim to contact candidates with the outcome within four weeks of the closing date of a vacancy. If you are shortlisted for an interview, you will be contacted to arrange a time and given details of anything you will need to prepare in advance
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide feedback on applications that have not been shortlisted.
Interview
Your interview will be competency-based and will either be face-to-face at one of our sites or online via Microsoft Teams. If your interview is online, please make sure you can access Teams and test your video and microphone before the interview.
You will be interviewed by a panel of at least two members of staff, one of whom will be your potential new line manager. At least one member of the panel will be trained in Safer Recruitment practices, and these will be followed during the interview, including asking you about any gaps in your employment history.
Our interviews are structured to maintain fairness and equity. For some posts, you may also be asked to take part in a timed assessment or deliver a presentation as part of the interview process. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the role or the organisation at the end of the interview, so you may want to prepare questions beforehand.
After your interview
The successful candidate will be contacted as soon as possible after the interview by the recruiting manager, who will be their line manager at SECG. If you are not successful at this time, we will also inform you as soon as possible after the interview, and provide feedback upon request.
Pre-employment checks
If you accept an offer of employment with us, you will be referred to our background check provider. You will be required to complete pre-employment checks, including an enhanced DBS, qualifications checks and possible additional checks depending on your role. We will also ask for two employment references; one of these should be your current or most recent employer.
Mandatory pre-employment training
You will be required to complete mandatory training in child protection and safeguarding before you can start work with us.
Induction and probation
You will be given a local induction as soon as possible upon starting your role at SECG, with introductions to your team and place of work. We also have a corporate induction, which will give you more information about our college. Most roles are subject to a six-month probation period, during which you will be offered formal and informal support and learning to help you settle in.
