Please note: Adult Maths and English Provision – Academic Year 2026–27
From September 2026, the College will no longer offer face-to-face classroom-based courses for GCSE Maths, GCSE English, Functional Skills Maths, or Functional Skills English.
All delivery will move to our online distance learning platform, PASS TECH. PASS TECH is an independent learning platform designed for learners who are able to study independently. Learners will work through the learning materials, assessments, and mock examinations online at their own pace.
Before enrolling, learners must ensure they have access to a suitable laptop or computer with a working camera, reliable internet access, and the ability to study independently.
Information sessions will be held at each campus prior to enrolment. During these sessions, the College will provide a demonstration of the PASS TECH platform, explain the enrolment process and entry requirements, and answer any questions relating to the programme.
Further details regarding enrolment and information sessions will be published on the College website once confirmed.
Entry Requirements
To study an adult English or maths GCSE it is necessary for you to attend an initial assessment and diagnostic session at South Essex College (this is not an exam). This will then enable us to gauge the level you are currently working at and enrol you on the most suitable pathway for your success.
GCSE English or Maths
You will be required to attend one of our adult diagnostic assessment events. Provided you have gained a Level 1 or 2 initial assessments and successfully complete the GCSE diagnostics at the appropriate level then you will be offered a place on the course. If you are unsuccessful you will be offered an alternative Level 2 course or a qualification that will prepare you for GCSE the following year.
Course Cost
Free for UK adults if you don’t already have a grade 4/C in GCSE or Level 2 equivalent in English & Maths
