The fleeting nature of beauty

Chloe Glover, a student on the Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course at South Essex Colleges Group, recently showcased her work at the end-of-year exhibition Patterns of Perception, presenting a thoughtful and personal exploration of transient beauty.
Inspired by a recent visit to Japan, Chloe’s artwork reflects on the concept of fleeting beauty, drawing influence from the delicate and symbolic nature of cherry blossom. Her piece explores themes of cyclical change and the transient qualities of beauty, inviting viewers to reconsider their own perceptions.
“My work looks at the fleeting nature of beauty and how it changes over time,” Chloe explains. “Visiting Japan really inspired me, particularly the cherry blossom. I became interested in the idea that beauty isn’t just in something at its peak, but also in its decline.”
Throughout her artistic journey, Chloe’s perspective evolved significantly. She began to appreciate beauty in moments often overlooked, recognising that even in the process of fading or decay, there is still something meaningful and visually striking.
“My perception of beauty has completely changed,” she says. “I’ve started to see that a flower doesn’t stop being beautiful just because it’s dying, there’s still something powerful in that stage.”
Chloe credits the support and guidance of her tutors as a key factor in her development as an artist.
“The tutors have been amazing. The communication has been so strong, and I really feel like my work has improved so much over the course. I now have a clear understanding of who I am as an artist, and the access to materials and support has been superb.”
Following her success on the course, Chloe has secured a place at University College London (UCL), where she will study History of Art. She hopes to build a future career in art conservation or curation, continuing her passion for preserving and interpreting artistic work.
“I’m really excited for what’s next. I want to pursue a career in conservation or curation, and this course has given me a strong foundation to move forward.”
Chloe’s work is a powerful example of how personal experience, cultural inspiration and academic support can come together to shape a confident and reflective creative voice.
