College launches National Apprenticeship Week

South Essex College is marking National Apprenticeship Week to showcase the popular training pathway.

The national week is the perfect opportunity for those looking to become apprentices to find out more, as well as encouraging employers to consider the benefits of hiring an apprentice

Apprenticeships have recently undergone major reform, so there has never been a better time for learners and businesses to benefit.

The College will use the week to showcase testimonials from apprentices, debunk common myths about Apprenticeships and promote the vast range of vacancies available.

The College is constantly working to support Apprenticeships in traditional trades, but also identify other areas that will benefit both learners and employers.

One example of this is the College recently launching a Marine Engineering Apprenticeship. Despite the Thames Estuary being a thriving hive of maritime activity, there was no specific marine engineering programme in the South East of the country until the College launched its course in October.

Lecturer Simon Lofting said it was a fantastic opportunity for those looking to start their career in the industry

He said: “There is a huge call for marine engineers across the world, however they are few and far between.

“For decades apprentices in marine engineering have been placed on motor vehicle courses in the absence of marine engineering courses, or they have had to study in the far north and south of the country where these courses exist. Now those interested in marine engineering have access to a course specifically for them.”

This is just one example of a new and innovative Apprenticeship at the College, but there are many more areas in which Apprenticeships are available.

Joanne Giles, the College's Director of Apprenticeships, said: "It’s really important that we provide a very clear message to all employers in Essex that Apprenticeship funding is available and it is the commitment of the College to unravel the complexities behind Apprenticeships.

“Our aspiration is to provide clear advice and guidance that allows employers to access quality Apprenticeships programmes through the College.”
