Public Services Students Thrive in Outdoor Assessments

Hands-on outdoor learning brings assessments to life at Skreens Park.

It was a fantastic day for our Public Services students as they stepped out of the classroom and into the great outdoors for a series of land-based activities at Skreens Park. These hands-on sessions offered the perfect blend of fun and focused learning, as students completed vital assessments while embracing teamwork, leadership challenges, and physical tasks in the fresh air.

The visit to Skreens Park forms part of the curriculum designed to prepare learners for careers in the uniformed services. Activities ranged from orienteering and map reading to problem-solving and survival tasks—each one carefully aligned to meet unit requirements and learning outcomes.

David Birnie, Curriculum Lead for Public Services, commented: “Who doesn’t love having fun while completing assessments? Days like this are invaluable for developing the practical skills and resilience our students need. Nothing beats getting out of the classroom and into the real world to put learning into action.”

South Essex Colleges Group is proud to support immersive learning experiences like this, ensuring students not only achieve academically but also grow personally and professionally.
