South Essex College Group Students Honour VE Day with Local Commemorations
Public Services Students Join Forces with Veterans to Mark VE Day in Southend
Public Services students from South Essex Colleges Group (SECG) proudly took part in local VE Day commemorations this week, joining the Southend Naval and Military Club in a poignant tribute to mark the occasion.
The students participated in a ceremonial march to the Southend Cenotaph, where they observed a two-minute silence in remembrance of those who served during the Second World War. The ceremony concluded with a wreath-laying to honour the fallen.
Following the ceremony, the students were welcomed to the Southend Naval and Military Club for refreshments, where they had the opportunity to speak with veterans and members of the community.
David Birnie, Curriculum Leader for Public Services at South Essex College Group, said: “Our students conducted themselves with exceptional professionalism, respect, and pride during our VE Day Parade, showcasing the very best of what our college community stands for. A special thanks must go to staff member Graham Atkin, whose dedication, time, and planning were instrumental in making this event a success. His collaboration with Southend’s Naval and Military Club brought an added level of authenticity and honour to the day. Events like this are vital in helping our learners understand and appreciate the sacrifices of past generations while developing key values such as discipline, teamwork, and community spirit that are essential for careers in public service.”
This annual event forms part of SECG’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and ensuring students understand the importance of remembrance and service.
