Success Story: Kevin Inns

My name is Kevin Inns, and I studied with South Essex Colleges Group. This is my story.

I studied the Warehouse and Storage Skills Bootcamp at Thurrock College, a fully funded five-week course designed to provide  students with the qualifications and skills needed to progress into the logistics industry.

I already had experience in warehousing from a previous role, but I needed to gain my RTITB Forklift Licence to return to the sector. My time at Thurrock College gave me the qualifications I needed, while helping me rebuild my confidence and get into the right mindset for working in warehousing.

I attended the course four days a week and learnt from knowledgeable tutors using industry-standard equipment. This gave me valuable hands-on experience and allowed me to practise with the tools I now use every day in my job.

After completing the course, I achieved my RTITB Forklift Licence, CSCS Card and other industry-relevant qualifications. Shortly afterwards, I secured a role at Global Freight Connections (GFC) Ltd.

In my current role, I run manifests, unload lorries and load freight into racking. I found out about the vacancy through my tutor at Thurrock College, who made me aware of the opportunity and encouraged me to apply.

I would highly recommend the Warehouse and Storage Skills Bootcamp and Thurrock College to anyone thinking about returning to education. The course has allowed me to continue my career in bonded warehousing, and it was a supportive and professional environment to study in.

If you are considering taking the next step, I would say go for it. You can achieve your ambitions.

Employer Perspective

South Essex Colleges Group spoke to Global Freight Connections (GFC) Ltd about how Kevin has settled into his role and his transition from the Skills Bootcamp.

Kevin has settled well into the GFC team as his positive attitude and willingness to learn means he’s continuing to develop his confidence within his role. Describing him as a “breath of fresh air”.

GFC emphasised that Skills Bootcamps and apprenticeship partnerships with SECG are incredibly valuable in identifying good quality candidates, including individuals who may not ordinarily be able to access job adverts on social media. These partnerships provide employers with access to jobseekers who hold the industry-required qualifications such as the RTITB Forklift Licence and CSCS Cards for warehousing, and are ready to work.
