Students Journey to Filmmaking Excellence
Lucia Wells, creative media student, is a passionate film student at South Essex College Group, and has recently achieved a significant milestone participating in the prestigious ‘Short and Sweet Film Festival' and won the title of best director.
The festival, known for its competitive short film competition, saw entries from aspiring filmmakers across the region. From an initial pool of 40 semi-finalists, Lucia’s film stood out and made it to the final 19, with the potential to win several awards. Lucia was nominated for judges choice, audience choice, best cinematography, and best script.
Lucia’s short film, ‘Hope beyond the Threshold’ explores the day in the life of a woman navigating her fear of the outside world. This narrative resonated with many, capturing the essence of isolation and anxiety heightened by the recent lockdowns. The film was a labour of love, shot over three days and edited in just four, showcasing Lucia’s dedication and skill.
Reflecting on her journey, Lucia said: “The film course has been incredible, and the tutors are so supportive. I loved every moment, from the theory behind why we create films to the practical experience in studios and the TV room. The tutors were always there to guide and inspire us."
Lucia also found inspiration in the challenging times of lockdown, she said: "During the lockdown, everyone felt so separate. I attended a webinar once, and it struck me how isolated we all were. This feeling of loneliness inspired me to create something meaningful."
Looking ahead, Lucia is excited to continue her studies at the University of Portsmouth this September.
