South Essex Colleges Group marks Armistice Day

South Essex Colleges Group (SECG) came together to mark Armistice Day with a two-minute silence observed across all our colleges.

Both staff and students paid heartfelt tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our country and recognised the dedication of those serving in our Armed Forces today, who continue to safeguard the peace.

At Southend City College, a Remembrance Service was held to honour the occasion. Level 3 Public Services and Policing students (Years 1 and 2) led a formal parade in the atrium, supported by Level 1 and 2 Public Services students.

Two Level 2 students delivered the Ode of Remembrance before the two-minute silence, which was followed by the Last Post and laying of wreaths. The students then proceeded to the Cenotaph in Southend, where they continued to pay their respects.

At Thurrock College Public Service students marched, laid a wreath and performed a salute. The Last Post and a reading from the Ode of Remembrance followed the two-minute silence.

At Basildon College Marine Engineering students created a tribute at Luckyn Lane and students in all three campuses paid their respects by observing the two-minute silence.

David Birnie, Public Services Curriculum Leader said: “Our Uniformed Services learners led the Southend City Campus Remembrance Service with dignity, respect, and professionalism, embodying the core values of Public Services. The event offered a meaningful reflection on the sacrifices of those who served. Thank you to everyone who attended and to Graham Atkin for his support behind the scenes. This also concludes our work with the Royal British Legion this year, with our Level 3 Year 2 learners showing outstanding commitment while volunteering for the Poppy Appeal.”

South Essex Colleges Group is proud of the respect and unity shown across all colleges in honouring those who gave their lives for our freedom.
