South Essex Colleges Group crowned Essex Division 2 Cup Champions

South Essex Colleges Group (SECG) produced a superb team performance to secure a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Westcliff in the Essex Division 2 Cup Final at Aveley FC.

Played in extremely windy conditions, the final proved to be a difficult contest for both sides, with SECG facing a strong, physical and athletic Westcliff team. Chances were limited during a tightly contested first half, and neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.

SECG went into the break the more satisfied side after playing against the strong wind in the opening 45 minutes. The defensive unit of Bobby McFarlane, Jude McCarthy, Louie Watkins and George Boar stood firm throughout, defending resolutely and keeping Westcliff at bay.

With the advantage of the wind in the second half, SECG began to take control of the game. Excellent football through the midfield trio of Keaton Scales, Ethan Love and Ryan Moskwa allowed the team to dominate possession and build sustained pressure.

The decisive moment arrived in the 70th minute. After relentless pressing forced Westcliff into losing possession deep in their own half, Frank Whyte drove confidently towards goal before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper in a composed one-on-one finish.

SECG continued to dominate proceedings for the remainder of the match and deservedly held on to secure a memorable 1–0 victory and lift the Essex Division 2 Cup.

Steve Tilson, Head of the college’s Football Academy said: “It was an outstanding display from the entire squad and a thoroughly deserved triumph on the day.”
