Policing Student Reaches Final In National Competition

South Essex Colleges Group, Policing student, Jake Hicks is a finalist in the 2024 NCFE Awards.

Jake, 16 from Chadwell St Mary, chose to do this NCFE course as he has wanted to be in the police since he was a child. He said that the course is great because it is based around policing and has given him an excellent insight in to the profession.

He said: “This is one of the only police courses offered in Essex, designed to support those aiming for a career in The Police. The support from staff and the course units helps me reach my full potential. We participate in weekly gym sessions and practical drill to ensure we are prepared for a role in the police. I have also made some great friends on the course, which has improved my social skills and will benefit me in my future career.

“After I finish my course, I plan to progress onto the college’s level 4 higher National Certificate in Policing. This will allow me to become a special constable will studying my qualification. I then hope to obtain direct patrol status which will allow me to apply for full time roles in the police.”

Curriculum Leader for Public Services, David Birnie commented: “The Public Service team and I have nominated Jake for this Exceptional Service Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions and exemplary conduct as a police cadet.

“Jake's recent actions, including being named Police Cadet of the Year, a Jack Petchey award winner, and providing critical assistance during a medical emergency, demonstrate his unwavering dedication, exceptional courage, and commitment to public service. His quick thinking and decisive actions have made a significant impact on our community, reflecting the highest standards of integrity, compassion, and professionalism. We are all rooting for Jake to be crowned the overall winner.”

Jake’s ambition is to become an armed police sergeant and we wish him all the best in his endeavours.
