Graduation 2018: James Lester

Despite only finishing his degree earlier this year, James Lester from Corringham is already working in the industry.

The 21-year-old graduated with First Class Honours in BSc (Hons) Computer Games Design and has been working in the sector for the past month creating videogames for websites.

James said he has always been creative and enjoys storytelling, which is what sparked his interest in computer games design.

He said: “Computer games have evolved so much over the years, and will continue to do so, but the main principle of any game is the story, ideas and creativity behind it, which is what I love.

“There was a lot of practical work as part of the degree, so we had lots of opportunities to put the theory into practice and get really hands on.”

Once James completed his degree, he tirelessly sent out his CV to contacts to start his career in the industry and said dedication was the secret to success.

He said: “Most of my letters went unanswered, but the company that come back to me were impressed with my passion and drive. I think that’s just as important as the skills set you have, because you need to demonstrate that you really want something.”
