Who Let the Dogs Out?
Students were taught the purposes of police dogs.
Level 3 Animal Management students were treated to a presentation by PC Ross, in the pod at Luker Road to demonstrate the purpose of police dogs and their role in law enforcement.
Police dog Dexter the spaniel was brought on stage to demonstrate his abilities in sniffing out various forms of drugs and criminal objects that were hidden thoughout the pod.
Curriculum Manager of Science and Animals, Cat Mead said: "The presentation was about the use of dogs in the police force. How they are trained, chosen and how they are cared for."
"Animal care students are concerned about the welfare of police dogs and this was a great chance to discuss how the animals' needs are met. Some students progress to the police or military with the aim of becoming a dog handler. This demonstration was therefore very relevant to the jobs available in these areas and may also have sparked an interest in those who had never thought about a career with animals in these fields."
Cat said that the event was very successful. Ross was very friendly and made the students feel comfortable.
