Food Ahoy! SECG Catering Students Cook Up a Storm with the Royal Navy
Royal Navy challenge and inspire SECG catering students from Thurrock and Southend City Colleges
Catering students from South Essex Colleges Group (SECG) were given a unique taste of naval life as the Royal Navy dropped anchor at Thurrock College and Southend City College for a day packed with culinary challenges and career inspiration.
In a visit that blended education with entertainment, Royal Navy personnel delivered an engaging presentation outlining the wide variety of career opportunities available within the Navy – particularly in catering and hospitality roles at sea. The session was followed by a lively, fast-paced cooking competition inspired by the popular TV show Ready, Steady, Cook.
Students were put to the test in timed challenges, working in teams to plan and prepare inventive dishes using a selection of mystery ingredients provided on the day. The atmosphere in the kitchens was energetic and focused, with the young chefs rising to the occasion and showcasing their creativity and teamwork.
Martyn, a representative from the Royal Navy, praised the students’ performance, saying:
“The students behaved impeccably, they all worked well in a team and responded to the challenges that the Navy personnel set them. The results were amazing. Students were given feedback on all the dishes they prepared. An informative day was had by all.”
An impressive 95% of SECG’s Catering students took part in the event, which they described as a fun, hands-on learning experience and a brilliant opportunity to gain insight into life in the Royal Navy and the diverse roles available within the catering industry.
With full stomachs and inspired minds, the students left with a fresh appreciation of how their culinary skills could serve them and their country.
