Taster Day for the Theatrics

Southchurch High School attend a taster day at The Backstage Centre.

Specially selected students from Southchurch High School, attended a taster day and experienced some of the amazing facilities at The Backstage Centre in Purfleet.

Students were tasked with creating a radio advert using the recording studio. Director of The Backstage Centre, Brian Warrens said: “We had a foley sound workshop. They had to create a radio commercial, of which they had one hour to complete.” Brian felt that the students enjoyed the workshop, he added: “What surprised me the most, was their instinct. How they owned it. They just got on with it, did it and produced an amazing piece of work.”

The students also took part in a drama workshop, as well as being invited into the Costume and Construction complex at the studios. Programme Leader of BA HONS Costume & Construction Degree, Lou Cox said: “We introduced the students to a variety of different costumes. From ballet through to weird and wonderful creatures.”

She concluded: “The students were engaged with what we are doing and was enthusiastic throughout. They wanted to try on the costumes and had loads of questions to ask us. Hopefully we have inspired them to one day join our course.”
