Students take off on discovery of airport

Aviation students at South Essex College had the opportunity to experience a range of activities at Southend Airport during a recent visit.

The students, who study at the college’s Southend Campus, attended the launch of the airport’s winter safety programme.

They had the opportunity to use a remote controlled tug, take a trip in the bucket of a de-icing rig, and dress up in firefighting gear. They also took part in activities with Easy jet, air traffic control, and security, and enjoyed a visit to the private jet centre.

Tutor Karen Doran said it was a fantastic opportunity for the students.

She said: “The students experienced so many different aspects of working in the aviation industry in one day. It allowed them to see the opportunities available in this exciting and expanding sector and think about what they might want to specialise in when they complete their course.

“Visits like this are always beneficial to the students so they can put what they have learnt in the classroom into practice.”
