South Essex Colleges Group welcomes international education leaders for Global Community College Leadership Network Visit

South Essex Colleges Group proudly welcomed senior education leaders from across the globe for a prestigious three-day visit hosted in partnership with the Global Community College Leadership Network (GCCLN).

The visit celebrated international collaboration, innovation in further education and the shared commitment to improving student success and community impact.

Founded in 1989, the GCCLN is a not-for-profit association of community and technical colleges dedicated to promoting the exchange of ideas among educational leaders worldwide. The organisation supports college CEOs and leadership teams in driving positive change, advancing equity-focused student success and responding to the evolving needs of local communities.

South Essex Colleges Group CEO Denise Brown welcomed an esteemed delegation including GCCLN Executive Director Cindy Miles; GCCLN President Tracy Hartzler of Central New Mexico Community College; Steve Robinson and Kathy Robinson, Lansing Community College; Brian King and Donna Courville, Los Rios Community College District; Damian Duffy, Belfast Metropolitan College and Tony Munroe, Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Others from the organisation attended some sessions virtually including: Mordecai Brownlee, Community College of Aurora; Margaret Ford Fisher, Houston City College; Anne Kress, Northern Virginia Community College; Curtis Ivery, Wayne County Community College District and Julie White, Pierce College

The visit provided delegates with a first-hand insight into the breadth of education, industry partnerships and student talent across South Essex Colleges Group.

Proceedings began with a lively Murder Mystery evening at the Roslin Hotel in Southend, where Performing Arts students delivered an energetic and immersive production for guests. The Mayor of Southend, Nigel Folkard, also attended the event in support of the college group’s international partnership activities.

GCCLN Executive Director Cindy Miles praised the evening, saying: “What a fantastic evening. The performers were amazing and filled the room with energy. It was a wonderful introduction to the creativity and passion that clearly runs throughout South Essex Colleges Group.”

The following day, delegates visited Southend City College, where they received presentations on apprenticeships and the delivery of vocational education within the UK further education sector. Visitors also attended a presentation from the London and Southeast Education Group titled Good for Me, Good for FE, which explored innovation, wellbeing and workforce development within further education.

Guests were then treated to a showcase performance from South Essex Colleges Group students studying Year 2 Dance and Year 1 and 2 Musical Theatre. The performances highlighted the creativity, professionalism and outstanding talent of learners from across the college group.

Education consultant and speaker Pablo Lloyd later delivered a keynote address on The Ethical Advantage. This was a compelling exploration of how ethical leadership drives performance and trust, with practical frameworks for values-based decision-making and leading with clarity and integrity.

Delegates then travelled to Thurrock College for an evening reception and dinner hosted at Waves Restaurant. Guests enjoyed a four-course tasting menu created by Level 3 Catering students under the guidance of chef Anurag Aggarwal, alongside first-class hospitality delivered by Level 2 Cabin Crew learners and live entertainment from talented Level 3 Music students.

Thurrock College Principal Brad Brooks said: “We were honoured to host members of the GCCLN. Our learners rose to the occasion in every possible way and showcased not only their technical skills, but also their professionalism, confidence and ambition. Thank you to everyone involved in making the evening such a success.”

The final day of the visit took place in London, where delegates enjoyed a guided tour of the Royal Ballet and Opera House in Covent Garden before concluding the trip with a performance of Made in America by Tulsa Ballet.
