South Essex College student creates new logo for South Essex Housing Group

The work of a South Essex College Graphic Design degree student has been chosen as the winner in a competition.

Sarah Hill, from Brentwood, entered South Essex Housing Group’s contest to create a new logo for the organisation and was ‘ecstatic’ when her design was placed in top spot.

The 22-year-old was keen to work on a live brief in the final year of her degree programme and started exploring different avenues before deciding to use the concept of a keyhole because it symbolises new beginnings.

She combined a keyhole with a modern font and was able to produce not just a logo but also a logo mark.

Sarah, who completed her degree earlier this year, said it was a fantastic experience.

She said: “Real life briefs are always exciting because of the possibility that your work could be put to actual use. Winning this brief has given me much more confidence and has made me realise that I have what it takes to work in the graphic design industry.

“I had nothing but positive experiences at South Essex College. The lecturers were always on hand, the facilities were great and I had a much more enjoyable experience there than when I was originally studying in London.”

Sarah attended the logo award ceremony at the Housing Essex Conference on Thursday 22 November where she was announced the winner.

Chair of the South Essex Housing Group, Helen McCabe said: “All submissions were of a high standard and partners were particularly impressed with everyone's preparation and execution of the work in response to the brief.

“The winning logo was chosen because it was the most professionally put together; clearly setting out the rationale behind how it could be used to support the work of the Housing Group. We were delighted to invite Sarah Hill to receive the award at our Housing Conference on 22 November this year.”
