Freddie said: “We was walking down Southend High Street and we witnessed a an elderly gentleman having a seizure. We rushed over and gave him some assistance. It was quite the situation, but we were there to help in any way we could.”

Eleanor Aberdein, also studying on the Level 3 Diploma in Policing said: “We relied on each other a lot and just to make sure that we're doing the right thing. We made sure that he was all right and we were happy to help.”

Curriculum Leader of Public Services and Sport, David Birnie said: “I am incredibly proud of the outstanding actions that our students displayed throughout this incident. Their selfless dedication to the wellbeing of a fellow community member is truly commendable. It is positive to see our Policing students stepping up to make a real difference. Hats off to these remarkable individuals, as their actions contribute significantly to the positive reputation of The Southend City College.”

Public Services Lecturer, Lee McCarthy said: “The action of these Policing students is a testament and a reflection to the extremely high ethics, morals and standards that are re-enforced by the South Essex College Diploma in Policing. While younger people are seen to lack the inner fortitude of previous generations by some, this should be a heralding call out to society these students are an exceptional example of what the younger generation are quietly achieving.”

After the situation and as to why he feels proud to be studying on the course, Freddie said: “To help people and do first aid really makes me want to do more in being able to help people. It really does enhance my confidence and to wear the uniform, although it's just a college uniform, you do feel proud to wear it and you feel like you have a sense of responsibly because you are wearing that uniform.”
