Good for ME Good for FE community champion: Fiona Watson

As part of the Good For ME Good For FE national campaign, the college will be celebrating a ‘Community champion’ each month to demonstrate how staff go above and beyond to help their local communities.

Fiona Watson, Health and Science Lecturer, volunteers at St. Mary’s Horse Sanctuary in Hawkwell. Her role is to work in the fields with the horses and also maintain the website - www.stmaryshorserefuge.org

She said: “I like being in the fresh air and seeing the horses benefit from our care. I’ve made good friends with the other volunteers and look forward to going every week.

“It’s very satisfying, especially when people who have sponsored a pony come to visit and can see how their sponsorship money is being used. We also have young children who come and learn how to groom horses, it’s great to see them develop in confidence.”

Fiona added: “I would definitely recommend volunteering. It’s an escape for me and I really enjoy doing something completely different.”
