GCSE case study: Nikita Razin

Budding scientist Nikita Razin, 17, from Southend, is a testament to perseverance and hard work.

Nikita came to Britain from Russia last October with only basic English. He joined South Essex College and took an ESOL course and a GCSE in maths, both of which he passed with flying colours gaining an incredible grade 7 for his GCSE.

He said: “When I first came to the College it was quite hard to adjust, but everyone was very supportive and after December everything got a bit easier.”

Whilst studying Nikita held down various jobs and with the support of his mum Irina is looking forward to starting his A-levels in maths, physics and business studies at the College.

His proud mum said: “I am very proud of my son and the College has helped him towards a good future.”

Nikita wants to pursue a career in science after he has done a degree.
