Dawn is a Cut Above the Rest

Dawn Bough, has been cutting the hair of homeless people.

Level 2 Adult Hairdressing student, Dawn Bough, has been in Ilford with a team from the NHS cutting the hair of homeless people. She and the team worked outside as services were being provided by other teams inside the building’

Dawn explained: “The homeless people have everything done there, they shower, and eat there and are able to wash their clothes."

“There was so many of them, it was shocking, but I treated them like they were in a proper salon and they were so happy. They looked in the mirror big smiles were on their faces. The homeless people were really nice, they sat and closed their eyes while I cut their hair, I massaged their scalp afterwards and then used the soft brush, as a sensory tool.”

Her tutor, Dianne Moore said: “I am so proud of Dawn, she has always wanted to do hairdressing, but had a young family, so many years later she decided it was her time."

“She was very nervous and at many times doubted whether she would complete the course. For her to join other hairdressers and take part in this project has really shown how much her confidence, ability and competence has grown. The others in the group said they felt really inspired to do something similar”.
