South Essex Colleges Group student wins Police Cadet of the Year

South Essex Colleges Group, Year 1 Police Diploma student, Jake Hicks beat over 600 competitors to be named Essex Police’s Police Cadet of the Year.

Jake, 16 from Thurrock, was presented with a certificate and a glass trophy by Chief Constable of Police B J Harrington at a ceremony in Chelmsford.

Jake said: “My legs turned to jelly when I got the award, but it is a great feeling to know that I have made my family and tutors so proud.”

Jake said that he has wanted to be in the police since he was a child and that he is enjoying learning about the different units.

Tutor, Lee McCarthy said: "Jake is a fantastic student and we are very proud of his achievements." 
Jake also won a Jack Petchy Award which celebrates the achievements of young people at colleges. He hopes to progress through police training and eventually become an armed officer with Essex police.
