Bricklaying students benefit from industry talk

Bricklaying students at South Essex College benefitted from a talk by industry experts.

Representatives from Lee Marley, one of the UK’s leading brickwork, scaffolding and integrated facade subcontractors, visited the college’s Stephenson Road campus to meet the students. Bricklaying students who study at the college’s Thurrock campus also attended the presentation.

The group heard about opportunities at the company, including apprenticeships, to help them with their career progression choices when they complete their course.

They also heard about working in the industry from those with first-hand experience and asked plenty of questions to find out more.

Construction Trades Curriculum Manager, Matthew Proctor, said the event was extremely valuable for the students.

He said: “Visits from industry experts like this are important as they allow our students to find out what employers are looking for and opportunities within their chosen trade.

“The students were fully engaged and asked insightful questions. They took on board all of the tips and advice they were given ready for their next steps towards employment.”

The college is now arranging for the company to undertake some practical observations of students in the workshops, as well as visits to Lee Marley sites, to help them with their development.
