Hairdressing Level 3 Diploma

It’s a great progression into your career path, especially if you’re aiming to extend your skills in the salon or even start your own business

This is her story

From student to salon professional: Building a career in hairdressing

After completing her GCSEs, Lilly took the next step in her education by enrolling at South Essex Colleges Group, beginning a journey that would see her grow in confidence, develop professional skills, and ultimately launch a career in the hair and beauty industry.

A passion for progression

Starting at Level 2 and progressing through to Level 3, Lilly quickly discovered a genuine passion for hairdressing. Inspired by her enjoyment and success, she chose to continue onto the Level 4 Salon Management course at Southend City College, making the most of an additional year of education to deepen her knowledge.

What stood out most during her studies was gaining a full understanding of what happens behind the scenes in a business. From operations to management, the course gave her valuable insight into the realities of running a salon, knowledge that continues to support her career today.

Support that builds confidence

A key part of her journey was the support she received from her tutor, Marc, who taught her across Levels 2, 3 and 4. His encouragement and belief in her abilities helped her develop both professionally and personally.

“He always pushed me further and helped build my confidence.”

This strong tutor-student relationship played an important role in shaping her work ethic and determination to succeed.

Turning skills into a career

Since completing her course, Lilly has successfully transitioned into employment at the College as a hair and beauty facilitator, she also helps manage a salon at weekends.

Her role at College includes:

  • Supporting tutors and students in practical sessions
  • Preparing classrooms and equipment for lessons
  • Managing stock orders and bookings

Her weekends working at a salon, she:

  • Provides professional hairstyling services
  • Supports the management of the salon
  • Ensures smooth, safe and professional day-to-day operations
  • Prepared for industry success

Reflecting on her time at South Essex Colleges Group, she credits the experience with fully preparing her for the workplace.

“It gave me full knowledge and understanding of real-life expectations and situations, which has prepared me and given me confidence.”

Through hands-on learning and real client experience, Lilly was able to build the skills and confidence needed to thrive in a professional environment.

A moment to remember

One of Lilly’s favourite memories from her time studying at college highlights how far she has come: “Making a hairstyle I had imagined become real life on my first client, and seeing the smile on their face as well as mine.”

It’s a moment that captures both her creativity and the satisfaction of working with clients.

A supportive environment

To any future student Lilly strongly recommends South Essex Colleges Group, praising the welcoming atmosphere and dedicated staff.

“The staff are very supportive and encouraging, and it’s a happy environment where everyone wants to see each other do their best.”

Advice for future students

For anyone considering the Level 4 Salon Management pathway, Lilly’s advice is simple: “It’s a great progression into your career path, especially if you’re aiming to extend your skills in the salon or even start your own business.”

Lilly’s story is a great example of how dedication, support, and the right learning environment can help students turn their passion into a profession.
