Success Story: Rob Wood

One of the most important things I developed during my time at college was my confidence. Through open discussions and presentations, I learned how to speak confidently in front of people

At South Essex Colleges Group, we help you develop the skills, confidence and industry knowledge need to progress into your chosen career. With supportive teaching and our career-focused course offering, our students gain real insight into their industries and the tools needed to succeed.

Rob’s journey shows how the right course, determination and ambition leads to exciting opportunities in the aviation industry.

Success Story: Rob Wood

My name is Rob Wood and I studied Aviation Operations Extended Diploma at South Essex Colleges Group from 2020 – 2022. This is my story.

I decided to study at South Essex Colleges Group because the unique course offer of Aviation Operations was tailored to my specific long-term career goals of becoming a pilot. The friendliness and support of the tutors I felt on the college’s Open Day stood out to me too.

I joined the college after completing my GCSEs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the challenges at the time, starting the course gave me a clear direction and something to focus on.

During my course, I gained a strong understanding of how the aviation industry operates. It provided valuable insight into what happens behind the scenes at airports and within the wider industry, which helped prepare me for my future career.

One of the most important things I developed during my time at college was my confidence. Through open discussions and presentations, I learned how to speak confidently in front of people. It was something I had always wanted to improve and there were many opportunities at college helped me do that. The college not only prepared me well for my career goals by supplying tailored learning and materials but also taught me how to navigate becoming a competent and professional adult. I gained many life skills such as interpersonal skills and teamwork which has helped me tremendously in the work I do and in my personal life.

I worked hard throughout my course and achieved the highest possible grade of D*D*D*, which is something I am extremely proud of.

My greatest achievement so far has been receiving a job offer to begin my journey as a commercial airline pilot. After years of dedication and preparation, being told I had secured that opportunity was a surreal feeling.

Looking back, the course not only prepared me for my career but also helped me develop as a person. It gave me the skills, knowledge and mindset needed to progress into a professional environment.

The best part about doing further education is the ability the give yourself many more opportunities further in life regarding career choices and development. You also get the opportunity to study something new outside of the school environment, that’s interesting to you.

I would recommend South Essex Colleges Group because it provided tailored learning, strong support and helped me develop into a confident and capable individual.

Looking ahead, my ambition is to continue developing my career and progress to become a Captain.

Commenting on Rob’s progress, his course tutor Karen Doran said: “When Rob joined the college he was so driven and focussed to achieve his goal of becoming a pilot.  He worked hard in lessons to achieve D*D*D* and outside of college continued working towards gaining his PPL and increasing his flying hours. Rob was successful in gaining a place at Leading Edge Aviation, where he successfully completed the course and was subsequently offered a position with Ryanair to fly on the B737.  Rob has now completed all his ground training and flying training, and is now operating as a First Officer with Ryanair.  I am incredibly proud of Rob - just shows that hard work and determination pays off.”

If Rob’s story has inspired you to explore a career in aviation, now is the perfect time to take your next step. Our courses are designed to give you real industry insight, build your confidence and prepare you for your future career.
