GCSE boost for students

GCSE boost for students

Students at South Essex College are celebrating after securing improved GCSE results in English and Maths.

Many students who took GCSE resits alongside their College course saw their grades improve compared to their school results, meaning they can now progress onto a higher level of study, or secure employment.

Many students achieved higher grades than they received last year at school, with some progressing through two or three grade boundaries.

One student, Ellie-Mae Gardiner, 16, from Rayleigh, struggled with maths and English at school and never though that she could realise her ambition to work with children.

She gained a brilliant Grade 5 in English Language and a Grade 4 in maths, meaning she can now progress on to a Level 3 qualification in Health and Science at the College.

A delighted Ellie- Mae said: “I have really enjoyed this year at College, it is so much better than school because the classes are smaller and you get much more personal attention. I really don’t know how I got through, but I am so happy.”

Another student, Ahmad Salehi, 20 from Stanford-le-Hope, arrived in England on his own three years ago with only basic English skills. He was delighted when he opened his results to see he had gained a grade 5 in maths and grade 4 in English.

Ahmad said: “I have enjoyed my time at the College in so many ways. The teachers and my new friends have been there all the way, and because I am on my own, their support has meant so much to me. It has given me the opportunity to make my life better and had led to many more opportunities.”

Ben Maynard, 17 from Shoeburyness, was ecstatic to get a grade 4 in English.

Ben is autistic, and his condition means that unfamiliar surroundings and situations can be very challenging, he explained: “I had to go through a lot both academically and socially, but I just kept pushing myself. I have had an exceptional time at College and I have had lots of support. I feel a lot more confident now, than this time last year.”

Jo Styles, Cross College Manager English and Maths, congratulated the students on their achievements.

She said: “We would like to congratulate all of our students on their success and excellent achievements. It really does highlight the importance of resilience, attendance, hard-work and sheer determination.”

South Essex College also offers English and Maths courses for adults to help them get the grades they need to progress on to courses to gain industry recognised qualifications.
