Students get a taste of Asia with masterclass

Hospitality and catering students at South Essex College’s Thurrock campus took part in a culinary masterclass delivered by a leading industry professional.

The 10 students were set the challenge of creating either a Japanese or an Indian street food dish working alongside Paul Hawkins, Unilever Development Chef.

Unilever makes some of the best known brands in the world including Hellmann’s, Ben & Jerry’s, Marmite, Colman’s, and Knorr.

Paul also spoke to the students about Unilever’s commitment to ethical sourcing and production to reduce the impact on the environment.

Graeme Collie, Head of Commercial Catering, said it was a fantastic opportunity for the students.

He said: “Giving the students the opportunity to work alongside an industry professional was an invaluable boost to their learning and development.

“They were really enthusiastic to get involved and put their skills to the test while taking on board the excellent advice and guidance Paul offered.”

As part of the College’s recently developed business partnership with Unilever, both organisations are working together to deliver a three part annual cooking competition for hospitality and catering students as well as delivering two masterclasses per year.
