Errol McKellar Talks, Students Listen

South Essex College was honoured to be visited by Errol McKellar for a Q&A with students.

South Essex College were proud to welcome Errol McKellar, from the Errol McKellar foundation, to speak to students and staff about his journey with prostate cancer.

He spoke to both students and staff in the POD at the college’s Luker Road campus and also spoke to visitors at the college’s open event

Errol, 64 was born in Brent, North London. His first 53 years were focused mainly around his family, football and work. He had been a youth team coach and scout with Leyton Orient, and several other London clubs for almost 30 years, including working with many stars such as David Beckham, Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell.

In 2010, Erroll’s life changed when he was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer. He didn’t have symptoms, but whilst waiting for an appointment with his GP, he saw a leaflet about prostate cancer and asked to be tested as he was already there. His PSA level came back slightly high, and further tests revealed he had 92% prostate cancer. In February 2011, Errol had an operation to remove his prostate followed by three months of radiotherapy.

Errol has now incredibly been given the all clear. However, he is continually dealing with some of the serious side effects from his treatment, including bladder control and erectile dysfunction.

The mission at the Errol McKellar foundation is to raise awareness, and talk to as many men and their partners as possible. He has dedicated his life to making men aware of the dangers of prostate cancer, and encouraging them to get tested.

Errol said: “I really want to get this message to the younger audience because a lot of them do not even know what or where the prostate is.”

He added: “The reason I am telling my story is because I don’t want any of these boys or men to have to go through what I went through, and I want them to hear the reality of it."
