Rosa Miguel - Adult Learner of the Year

Rosa Miguel from Purfleet studies Entry Level ESOL at the college’s Thurrock Campus.

Rosa is the Course Rep for her group. She was nominated for being confident, positive and a role model for her classmates.

Her lecturer said: “She works well with others, she’s accountable, responsible, admits mistakes and listens to opportunities to improve. She is thoughtful, insightful and contributes ideas willingly.”

Rosa said: “I was extremely excited when I found out about the award and also very proud that I have come this far.

“I do enjoy college a lot, mostly because I get to learn about new cultures and meet new people. I am considering attending university after college.”

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Student of the Year, Angel Hara, was praised for the progression she has made in her studies.

Tutors of the 19-year-old from Westcliff said ‘everything from her behaviour, her commitment to the course and her level of English have all come on leaps and bounds and she has matured into a dedicated and hardworking young woman.’

They added: “She aspires to become a writer and she is very proactive in achieving her goal. In the recent story writing competition we had for national storytelling week her story absolutely blew us away with her imagination.”

Angel said she did not expect to win the award but is ‘happy and excited.’

She said: “Teachers at the college are very friendly and helpful. I would recommend South Essex College because it offers many courses and choices.”
