3D Design Tutor wins prestigious Etsy Award

South Essex College Group Tutor, Ed Heritage has won the Etsy Lighting Award for his innovative creation called ‘Tilt Lamp.’ The Etsy competition saw 18 creatives bag a prize of £1,500 for their imagination and skill by creating beautiful, hand-made items.

Currently, Ed is teaching 3D Design at South Essex College Group and was previously working in London at the Conran store in Marylebone. Before this, Ed was teaching English in Asia.
Ed told us: “I’ve always been creative and have loved making and designing things since I was a child. When I was in school I wanted to be a cartoonist.”

Ed’s Ikigai-inspired creation is a Japanese concept that puts emphasis on finding meaning in everyday moments and reimagines the traditional lamp switch. When tilted in one direction, the lamp turns on and when tilted in the opposite direction it switches off. The first version of the lamp was designed when Ed did his Master’s degree in London, before moving to Taiwan, where he developed it further.

The Tilt Lamp was created at EdHeritageStudio  and priced at £240 It comes in three colours; black, orange and natural birch. He also offers a range of scented candles.

One Etsy review said: “What a beautifully designed candle, I don't think I've ever seen a more elegant holder than this! Ed even made another one for me filled with the scent I wanted because it had sold out. These are perfect presents, thank you very much!”

Ed saw the Etsy competition on Instagram and put his lamps up for sale and applied for the award. This lead to him being nominated and then winning. He told us: “I’ve got loads of new ideas and designs in my head for the future and can’t wait to get them out there. If anyone has an idea like mine and are worried, just go for it. If anything was to fail, you always learning from failing so just do it.”
