Learning and Progression

Learning and Progression courses at South Essex College

Our Learning and Progression courses aim to give young people from different backgrounds an opportunity to thrive and succeed in their studies. Students will study in a fully inclusive environment and mix with their peers who are studying other courses to encourage the development of the skills and knowledge they need to progress to the next level.

The Preparing for Adulthood Team (PFA)

The Preparing for Adulthood Team (PFA) at South Essex College offer fully inclusive, bespoke study programmes aimed at gaining a qualification. We provide the learning and support that will enable you to progress educationally and socially. By using strategies that enable you to achieve and build on your strengths and concentrating on areas that need development, you will be ready to take the next steps to your chosen pathway.

Because our campuses are central to the town centres in Grays, Southend, and in 2021 Basildon, we are able to build and develop good community inclusion so you can feel safe and learn to access these areas. You will also develop skills in independent living and money management. We know that for some people the ability to travel on public transport may need development and our close proximity to bus routes and train lines allows us to support you with this.

Our study programmes take a “student centred” view on education, teaching the skills that will help you in your education, employment and life at a level that is appropriate for you.

Our study programmes are the first step in enabling you to progress to further study, independent living and employment whilst helping you to gain the skills you need to be successful.

Vocational Studies Team

The Vocational Studies Team at South Essex College are here to help if you haven’t enjoyed school or it wasn’t for you. We offer the chance for you to experience a taster of your chosen career or a try a couple of options if you are unsure.

This gives you the opportunity to develop the skills and the entry qualifications in a more adult environment allowing you to move onto the next level of education or employment. You will gain hands-on experience within your chosen career and be taught by vocationally-trained teachers who understand the industry you wish to enter.

The team understands that you may have some barriers that have affected your learning at school, so they will work with you to discover ways to help you overcome them and succeed in life.

Your Study Programme will also include English and maths which are vital not only in your chosen careers but in everyday life. Our teachers will develop your skills using different methods that suit your needs and understanding.

Together we will help you succeed and find your thirst for education again.
