Success Story: Rawnaq Haneen

The college has prepared me for a career by improving my skills and helping me communicate with clients. It’s been perfect for me

From ESOL to Hairdressing: Building Skills, Confidence and a Future Career

At South Essex Colleges Group, we believe that language should never be a barrier to achieving your ambitions. Through supportive teaching, practical learning and industry-focused training, we help students develop the skills and confidence needed to progress into further study, apprenticeships and employment. Rawnaq's story shows how determination, resilience and the right support can help you achieve your goals and build a successful future.

My name is Rawnaq Haneen, and I studied English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) alongside Level 2 and Level 3 Hairdressing at Southend City College. This is my story.

I chose to study at Southend City College because it is a wonderful place in the town centre with good bus and train transport links, making it easy for me to travel to college and focus on my studies.

During my time at college, I studied both ESOL and Hairdressing. Completing the courses was a challenge because English is not my first language, but I was determined to improve my skills and work towards my career goals. The tutors supported me throughout my journey and helped me build my confidence both inside and outside the classroom.

"The college has prepared me for a career by improving my skills and helping me communicate with clients. It’s been perfect for me."

One of the things I valued most about Southend City College was the supportive environment. The tutors were always available to provide information, guidance and encouragement, helping me overcome challenges and continue progressing.

Alongside developing my professional skills, I also gained confidence by making new friendships and meeting people from different backgrounds. These experiences helped me feel more comfortable communicating with others and prepared me for working with clients in the future.

"My favourite memory of college was when I passed the theory exam. It was a big challenge.

In the next 12 months, I see myself having an apprenticeship to help me progress further in hairdressing, hopefully leading to a job. I aspire one day to work in a professional hairdressing salon, using my languages to attract clients and providing privacy for women wearing a hijab."

I would encourage anyone whose first language is not English to consider studying at Southend City College.
