South Essex College students celebrate results

South Essex College students are set for university or to start their chosen career after receiving their course results.

Students from across the college’s sites have been receiving their vocational course results while sixth form students, who study at the college’s Southend Campus, collected their A-Level grades.

Representatives from Thurrock Council visited the college’s Grays campus to meet some students who have studied vocational programmes to congratulate them on their success and find out about study options available after school.

BTEC student Ellen Houghton, 20, from Brentwood, was over the moon with her double distinction and a merit grade in Graphic Design.

Ellen has been at South Essex College for four years and her success is all the more noteworthy as she lives with a severe hearing impairment.

She said: “I have not let my hearing impairment get in the way of my studies at all. The tutors have been so supportive, I have been given all the help I need. I would encourage anyone, especially if they feel that something is holding them back, to come to the college. I wouldn’t change my time here for the world.”

A-Level student Martina Morozova’s excellent A* in Fine Art means she will literally be able to get under people’s skin as she starts her apprenticeship as a tattoo artist.

The 18-year-old from Basildon said: “I chose South Essex College because it simply had the best departments and facilities. I have enjoyed my time here and I feel ready to take the next step.”

Mirian Emetuche came to England three years ago from Nigeria and achieved an A and two Bs in Psychology, Biology and Chemistry. She has now secured a place at Nottingham University to study Medical Physiology and Therapeutics.

The 18-year-old from Southend said: “I have been very content at the college, the teachers have been really inspiring, I have made lots of friends for life.”

Students who didn’t get the results they expected or needed to get into university need not panic. It’s not too late to apply through the UCAS Clearing system.

The college will be holding a degree Clearing event on Friday 16 August at The Forum, Southend. The free advice & guidance session will be open to students and parents from 4-6.30pm.
