A-Level case study: Nathan Smith

Budding games and software developer Nathan Smith, 18, from Southend on Sea is heading to a bright future as an entrepreneur after securing his place at Roehampton University with a great set of A-Level results.

After leaving Shoebury High School, Nathan joined South Essex College to study English Literature & Language and Business Management A-Levels for which he received C grades and a Subsidiary Diploma in ICT where he gained a Distinction * grade.

Nathan’s results are even more remarkable as he is partially sighted.

He said: “It has been an interesting couple of years, the first year was tough because I found it hard to settle, but with lots of help and support I turned it all around in the second year and that is one of the reasons I am especially pleased with my results.”

Whilst at the College Nathan was on the Board of Governors bringing serious issues to the attention of the Governors, he acted as the Student Union’s equality and diversity officer and was also an active student ambassador, helping out at open events.

Nathan will study Business Management at university and hopes to start his own games and software company on completion of his degree.

He explained: “I have been developing games and software since I was 13 and it had always been my ambition to go into that area. I have has a fun time at South Essex College and everyone has been very supportive. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead.”
