Overview
A three-week classroom based course followed by workshops and self-study that combines our iPrep course (skills for work) with lessons in becoming self-employed and how to promote your business ideas through social media marketing. Learn the regulations in relation to starting your own business and work on making your ideas a reality.

Entry Requirements
We regret that we cannot provide iLearn courses for free to individuals who reside in the following combined authorities: Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Greater Manchester, Liverpool City, North of Tyne, South Yorkshire, Tees Valley, West Midlands, West Yorkshire and West of England.
English Assessment
On the first day of your course you will be required to take a basic English assessment. The assessment is necessary for funding purposes, to ensure that you can cope with the written demands of the course and to make sure awarding body entry criteria is met. If you do not pass the English assessment we will refer you to our English department who may be able to offer you funded lessons to help develop your English.
Mandatory attendance
Gaining the amount of qualifications on offer requires dedication and commitment. This means attendance at all classroom sessions and completion of written coursework is compulsory.
Lateness or requests to leave early may result in your place on the course being withdrawn.
Coursework & homework
There will be written coursework that forms part of your training programme, some of which will need to be completed at home outside of classroom teaching hours. It is recommended that you set aside 1 – 3 hours per night to ensure you meet the course deadlines.
Candidate identification requirements
Candidates must provide one of the following forms of identification:
- Valid passport (any nationality)
- Signed UK photocard driving licence
- UK biometric residence permit card
- Birth certificate (BUT, if a birth certificate is presented as proof of identification, an additional form of identification such as a signed bank card, utility bill or a letter issued by a government department must also be provided).

- Highfield Certificate in Personal Development for Employability
- Highfield Award in Health & Safety
- OCN Award in Personal & Interpersonal Conflict
- Skillsfirst Certificate in Ways to Maintain Mental Well-Being at Work
Assessment & Feedback
Three weeks in total delivered as follows:
Weeks 1 and 2 will be Monday to Thursday 10:00 – 15:00. These weeks are on offer at Southend, Basildon or Thurrock (addresses below)
Week 3 will be Monday to Thursday 10.00 – 17.00 at Southend City College.

This course is FREE to those who were over 19 on 31/08/2023, are unemployed, resident in England and in receipt of Universal Credit or similar benefits.
It is also FREE to those who were over the age of 19 on 31/08/2023 and are working and earning under £20,319 per year (£23,302.50 in the Greater London Authority).
