Overview
This five-day course runs throughout the year and provides electrical and instrument technicians with the necessary competence to work in potentially explosive environments.
Dangerous substances can put people’s safety at risk from fire and explosion. Under DSEAR (Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002) employers and the self-employed have a duty to protect people from risk of fire, explosion and similar events in the workplace. This includes members of the public who may come into contact with work activity. The ATEX 137 User Directive (and ATEX 95) became part of DSEAR in 2006.
CompEx is a national joint training initiative developed and implemented by the Engineering Equipment and Material Users Association (EEMUA) and JTL and is supported by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). JTL has been appointed to develop, operate and manage the training provision across the UK and it has licensed and accredited a number of centres to deliver the training an assessment.
People attending this course often work in potentially explosive environments such as:
- On and off-shore oil and gas installations
- Petrochemical plants
- Distilleries
- Petrol forecourt environments
- Mills and other dust generating environments
- Power Utilities and generation
- Pharmaceutical
- Hydrogen generation and use
- Anywhere a flammable atmosphere either gas or combustible dust exist

Other personnel will receive a JTL CompEx Certificate of Core Competency, but NOT as an electrical craftsperson.
The Certificate of Core Competence is valid for 5 years and will need to be renewed every 5 years by attendance on the 3 Day CompEx Refresher course. Where 5 years has been exceeded, the delegate will need to attend the full 4 & ½ Day CompEx.
