Early Years graduate sets up successful childminder business

A University Centre South Essex graduate has started a successful business thanks to her degree qualification.

Lisa, D’Auria, 44, from Southend, studied BA (Hons) Early Years Education at the University Centre’s Southend Campus.

After completing the course, she set up Rocking Horse Childcare providing an Ofsted registered childminding service in her own home.

She said: “Starting a business is daunting for anyone but my degree supported me in this process. The modules and content prepared me for the wide range of knowledge I needed to make it a success.”

Her childminding setting is now full and she even employs an assistant. She added: “As an experienced nursery nurse of 20 plus years, when I started my degree I honestly felt like ‘What could I actually learn, this will be a bit of paper' but I was very wrong.

“The knowledge I gained on my degree is invaluable to my practice now. Learning from others young and old on their experiences, strategies, different curriculums, psychology, management theory and research enabled me to build on my practical knowledge of early years.

“The degree is the first step towards a future career. Take the leap, believe in yourself and use everything you are learning.”
