With the ever-evolving production industry makeup and hair stylists have to be highly skilled and ready to exceed modern needs within this creative industry. It is with this in mind that we have created the top up degree year where students can advance their techniques and skills to fit industry needs. Influenced by modern methods and enhanced techniques this top up year will take your fundamental artistry to a new level. Delving in to contemporary practices within visual effects and prosthetics developing personal individualism and conducting professional collaborations.
At Level Six students will be encouraged to expand their awareness of the diverse nature of the hair and makeup sector within production. With units designed specifically to facilitate students growth as emerging practitioners and encourage critical analysis within a plural context of current industry expectations allowing students to navigate their own career path.
Students will learn theoretical scrutiny of underpinning theories approaches and contextual factors which have influenced the art form supporting personal lines of enquiry and the critical evaluation of their own adaptability and entrepreneurial attitude for sustainable employment. Ensuring students gain the necessary knowledge to be a successful makeup and hair artist within in the TV film and theatre industry.
Entry Requirements
- 240 credits (120 at Level 4 and 120 at Level 5) achieved through a Performing Arts qualification
- IELTS (Academic) 6
- IELTS 6.0 minimum 5.5 across all components (Academic) 6

Entry to this course will also be determined by the quality of your application looking primarily at an audition set by the course team personal statement and reference.

Contact hours: 13 hours per week. Plus Independent Study (suggested 30 hours per week)
Assessment & Feedback
All assessment on the BA Hons Hair and Makeup Design and Application for Production is via coursework; there are no exams.
Coursework is assessed in a range of different ways in order to accommodate a variety of learning styles and aptitudes.
You will receive on-going feedback as part of your one-to-one sessions with your unit teachers. You will also receive summative feedback on all formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your unit leader. Feedback can be given in a range of different ways in order to accommodate a variety of learning styles and aptitudes including group critiques, recorded verbal feedback and written feedback.

Fees are per academic year for Home/UK students.
The following course-related costs are included in the fees:
- Guest speakers, visiting lecturers and industry focussed workshops will be included in your course over the three years.
- Third Year students will have the opportunity to showcase their final year work at the end of their studies. This may be a local, national or online platform. Event/exhibition costs will be covered by the Faculty of HE. In the past this has included New Designers.
- Students will be responsible for any additional costs associated with the production of their personal project (ie: printing, materials).
- Annual £20 of printing credit per year.
- Free Car Parking at Backstage Centre, Purfleet*
*Thursday classes are delivered at the Thurrock Campus and will incur a public carpark fee.

What Next...
On successful completion of the BA (Hons) Top Up year in Hair and Makeup Design, graduating students progress on to working as freelance makeup artists within the TV, film and Theatre industry at a junior or assistant level. Other students choose to further their education by studying at master level within specialized subjects or move into educational roles of the subject.
