In BSc (Hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science (ASES), You’ll explore the role that sport and exercise scientists play in physiology, biomechanics, sports medicine, and psychology, and how they enhance human performance and support human health. During the course, you will develop the required skills to become multi-disciplinary in the sport science professions, using theoretical and practical applications in numerous strands of sport and exercise science – for example, public health and chronic health conditions, nutrition for sports performance, exercise rehabilitation, performance analysis, applied biomechanics, psychology, exercise physiology and sport and exercise pedagogy; for progression onto higher level educational courses or to relevant industry employment.

- This consists of applied sport and exercise science sub disciplines (Exercise Physiology, Sport and Exercise Psychology, Sport and Exercise Pedagogy, Biomechanics/Analysis, Strength and Conditioning, Exercise Nutritional Assessment etc.). There is a great blend of classroom, laboratory space, sports field and gym.
- Industry-related work experience – we welcome collaboration from you and your own industries through our practice learning program that allows for you to gain valuable work experience alongside studying your degree.
- Additional qualifications integrated into the ASES programme (one per year) - some examples of this include; Level 2 Gym instructors, Level 2/3 strength and conditioning badge, coaching badges/qualifications etc.
- Introduction to teaching and learning through the level 3 award in education and training provided in the first year of the degree program integrated as part of the sport and exercise pedagogy module. This provides access to teaching qualifications should you wish to pursue a career in the education sector and study additional qualifications in education as part of your development alongside your degree programme.
- Opportunity to become a student member of the British Association for Sport and Exercise Science (BASES)
Entry Requirements
You will need a minimum of 64 UCAS Tariff Points or above from one or more of the following:
- A levels
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma/Diploma/Subsidiary Diploma/Certificate
- BTEC National Award/Certificate/Diploma
- International Baccalaureate
- Access to Higher Education Diploma (minimum 30 credits at Merit or above)
- GCSE English Language and Maths at Grade C (old specification) or Grade 4 (new specification) or above OR a Level 2 equivalent such as Functional Skills.
For any qualification not identified above the HE Admission Team will determine equivalences through UKNARIC.
Applicants wishing to be considered for entry to the second year of study or wishing to import credits or evidence of prior learning into the course for which they are applying will be considered in accordance with the awarding bodies policy on Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning.
Applications from mature students who do not possess the entry requirements as listed above but who possess related professional experience or professional qualifications are welcome. You will need to demonstrate by interview exceptional entry portfolio (this is likely to include evidence of paid or unpaid work experience) and/or written assessment that you are suitable for the course. DBS Check (Disclosure and Barring Service)
Successful applicants for this programme may require an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check before commencing practice placement in Year 3. DBS identification documents are verified by trained staff in line with DBS guidelines as part of the admissions process.
The administration charge for this service will be incorporated into the course fees.

Applicants who reside or previously have resided overseas will be required to provide a criminal record check or certificate of good conduct from their country or countries of residence prior to entry on to the course.

Work Placements
Work placements are encouraged throughout the duration of the course. However work placement as a mandatory course requirement feeds into your year three module work experience in sport and exercise science. Work placements that form part of the work experience in sport and exercise science module are to be negotiated with students and external employers using the standardized placement learning processes and therefore may vary in duration and length. It is advised that the more hours spent in placement, the more development and progress may be shown in your portfolio completed in year 3 of the programme.
There is a dedicated Practice Learning team to support students with the placement process.
Teaching & Learning
Contact hours: 13 hours per week over two days.
Plus Independent study (suggested 30 hours per week).
You are taught through a combination of lectures seminars and workshops which enable you to discuss and develop your understanding of the disciplines of Counselling and all professional aspects pertaining to the counselling industry.
A range of appropriate facilities including the library and online learning resources, the Learning Resource Centre and the Forum supports your independent learning.
Assessment & Feedback
You will receive on-going feedback as part of your one-to-one sessions with your unit teachers. You will also receive summative feedback on all formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your unit leader. Feedback can be given in a range of different ways in order to accommodate a variety of learning styles and aptitudes including group critiques, recorded verbal feedback and written feedback.
Feedback on the Final Major Project/Dissertation module in Year three is provided throughout and through supervision meetings as scheduled.

What Next...
- Seek professional development and accreditation via the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) to gain recognition in applied practice which provides the accredited title of ‘Sport and exercise scientist’
- Continue to study a Master’s Degree (Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Psychology, Exercise Physiology, Physical education, public health and allied professions etc.)
- Enter employment industries either through direct access routes via additional qualifications also, for example;
- Sport and Exercise Psychologist, Sports Coaching/ Physical education teacher, Biomechanist, Sport and Exercise Nutritionist Physiotherapy/Chiropractor, Performance Analyst, Strength and Conditioning Coach/Performance Coach
- Students also enter the teaching profession at FE levels, securing roles as Associate and Full time lecturers. Indeed the College has previously employed former graduates from this programme as Lectures on our Sports programmes
