Description

This qualification is for those who transport goods which are classed as dangerous by driving the vehicles on which they are loaded. It is also for those who administer or handle the dangerous goods between loading or unloading.

The purpose of ADR is to ensure that dangerous goods being carried by road can cross international borders unhindered, so long as goods, vehicles and drivers comply. ADR has been in force since 1968 and is administered by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It is updated every 2 years to take into account technological advances and developments.

ADR refers to the European Agreement which also enacts the UK's Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Act. All drivers who transport dangerous goods must hold a Vocational Training Certificate issued by SQA. This is required by UK regulations implementing the relevant EU directive. South Essex College ADR training courses are approved by the Department for Transport and provide drivers with the knowledge they need to be aware of the hazards inherent in carrying dangerous goods and how to protect themselves and those around them. Description

This qualification is for those wishing to drive an alternatively fuelled van weighing over 3.5t up to 4.25t. Enabling operators to reduce costs through savings not employing Cat C1 (7.5t) licence holders and reduced fuel bills. Operators will also be contributing to saving the planet and reducing their carbon footprint, a valuable quality sought after by more and more clients.

In July 2018 new legislation came into force. This allows holders of Category B driving licences to drive commercial vehicles up to 4.25 tonnes where that vehicle is powered by an alternative fuel.

However, to use this new 4.25 tonnes allowance, a driver must undertake five hours of prior training. This training must be undertaken with an instructor on the National Register of LGV Instructors or the National Vocational Driving Instructors Register and result in the issue of a certificate of training which they must carry. The regulations don’t allow for the derogation to be used during training (on the public highway), so the 5 hours of training will be either classroom based or practical training away from public roads – or a mixture of these.

Throughout the course the following fuel types will be covered:

  • Full Electric
  • Liquefied Natural Gas
  • Hydrogen Electric Hybrid
Who is the qualification for?

This course is designed for individuals who want to:

  • Drive a heavier AFV on a normal Cat B car licence
  • Reduce the operational costs of employing Cat C1 licence holders
  • Develop organisation from a conventionally fuelled fleet to a sustainable and environmentally considerate fleet
  • Reduce fuel costs which may currently contribute to a third of your costs
