Description

A C1 driving licence in the UK allows you to drive medium-sized vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes. This includes vehicles like ambulances, horseboxes, and small lorries or delivery trucks.

What You Can Drive with a C1 Licence:

  • Vehicles weighing 3,500 kg to 7,500 kg MAM
  • A trailer up to 750 kg
  • Commonly used for:
  • Ambulances
  • Delivery vans
  • Horseboxes
  • Removal trucks

Requirements to Get a C1 Licence:

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old
  • Existing Licence: You must hold a full UK Category B (car) licence
  • Medical Check: Complete a D4 medical form with a doctor
  • Apply for Provisional C1: Submit D2 and D4 forms to the DVLA

Theory Tests:

  • Multiple-choice test
  • Hazard perception test
  • Case studies (Module 2)

Practical Test:

  • Driving a 7.5-tonne vehicle (Module 3)
  • Optional: Module 4 (practical demonstration) if driving professionally

Notes:

  • If you passed your car test before 1 January 1997, you may already have C1 entitlement on your licence.
  • For professional use (e.g., ambulance driver), you may also need a Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence)

Description

A Category C (Class 2) driving licence in the UK allows you to drive large rigid vehicles over 3.5 tonnes in weight, with no upper weight limit, as long as the vehicle does not have a detachable trailer over 750 kg.

What You Can Drive with a C Licence:

  • Large goods vehicles (LGVs) or heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) over 3.5 tonnes
  • Rigid-body trucks (e.g., refuse trucks, tipper trucks, delivery lorries)
  • A trailer up to 750 kg

Requirements to Get a Category C Licence:

  • Age: You must be at least 18 years old
  • Existing Licence: You must hold a full UK Category B (car) licence
  • Medical Check: Complete a D4 medical form with a doctor
  • Apply for Provisional C: Submit D2 and D4 forms to the DVLA
