Course Overview

The Pearson BTEC HNC (Level 4) and HND (Level 5) in Digital Technologies (AI Solutions & Applications) equips you with the technical and professional skills needed for careers in computing, digital technologies and artificial intelligence.

Aligned with South Essex Colleges Group’s established HNC/HND Computing provision, this flexible online programme develops knowledge across programming, data, cloud computing, cyber security and AI, with a strong focus on real‑world application and employability.

You may study Level 4 as a standalone qualification or progress to Level 5 and use the programme as a pathway to the final year of a related Honours degree. The qualification is awarded by Pearson and recognised by employers and universities.

You can study Year 1 as a stand‑alone Higher National Certificate (HNC) or continue to Year 2 to achieve a Higher National Diploma (HND).

The pathway is structured over 2 years. At Level 4 (HNC), you will develop core computing and professional skills, including programming, cyber security, cloud fundamentals, software development lifecycles, and an introduction to artificial intelligence and intelligent systems. At Level 5 (HND), you will build advanced technical and analytical capabilities through the study of business intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), application development, emerging technologies and work based learning. Assessment is through 100% coursework, with portfolio based assignments and formative feedback provided throughout the programme.

You will benefit from flexible online learning that fits around your existing commitments. Assessment is through coursework rather than exams, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills throughout the programme. On completion, you can progress to employment or continue your studies through a degree top up course.

Eligible students may also be able to access Higher Education student finance.

Entry Requirements

Level 4 (Year 1 Qualification)

To study to Level 4 of this course, you will need the following:

GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject, or,
Other related Level 3 qualifications such as T Levels or
Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved Further Education Institution.
Relevant work experience or an international equivalent of the above qualifications.

You are also expected to have GCSEs at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above in English and Maths.

If English is not your first language, you are required to have the following English language proficiency standards (or an approved equivalent for this qualification): IELTS Academic 6.0 minimum 5.5 across all components.

To progress to Level 5

To study to Level 5 of this course, you will need the following:

Successful completion of the HNC Level 4 in Digital Technologies (AI)
You are also expected to have GCSEs at Grade 4 (Grade C) or above in English and Maths.

Assessment and Feedback

There are no external exams included in this study programme, instead, you will complete several written assignments.

The curriculum is set up to support a portfolio approach to continuous assessment. Learners will study modules and develop a portfolio of evidence. Each module will have milestones where formative assessment is provided, and learners can then continue to work on their portfolios before a final submission at the end of the module.

NB: You have one year from starting to complete the relevant level (either Level 4 or 5).

Fees and Funding

The cost of this course is £6000 per annum.

Both stages of the Online Degree Pathway (Level 4, Level 5) are eligible for Higher Education student finance through the Student Loans Company (SLC). This allows you to apply for a government loan to cover 100% of your tuition fees.
