Safe, practical support for finding student accommodation

This support is designed for undergraduate students who are preparing to live independently while studying and need guidance in finding safe, suitable accommodation. It is particularly helpful if you are new to renting, unfamiliar with the local area, or want reassurance when making decisions about housing during your studies.

Supporting your move to university

You will receive practical advice on how to search effectively for accommodation, including how to explore a wide range of options through both letting agencies and private listings. The support helps you understand how to use search tools, compare locations and prices, and identify properties that meet your needs. You will also be guided on important considerations such as budgeting for rent and additional living costs, understanding tenancy agreements, and recognising what to look for when viewing a property, including safety, condition and included facilities.

Alongside this, you will have access to dedicated guidance from the undergraduate support team, who can help you make informed choices with confidence. This includes advice on finding verified and reliable housing options, understanding contracts, and considering arrangements such as sharing accommodation. The aim is to support you in making decisions that are both financially manageable and suitable for your lifestyle as a student.

By the end of the process, you will feel more confident navigating the rental market and managing the responsibilities that come with living independently. This support helps you build essential life skills that will benefit you throughout your studies and beyond, while ensuring you have a safe and comfortable place to live.

Options & Advice

Suggestions for seeking accommodation:

  • Consider both agency and private listings to maximise options.
  • Use filters: location (e.g., SS1, SS2), price range, bedroom count, furnished/studio etc.
  • Set up email alerts for new listings at your preferred price.

Councils also provide lists of registered HMO’s (Houses of Multiple Occupancy).

Our team would like to offer you dedicated accommodation support.

We can provide guidance on available housing options, help you explore suitable locations, and ensure you have clear information to make the best choice for your needs, including that it is:

We recommend that, when looking for alternative accommodation, you consider the following:

  • Start looking as soon as possible
  • Use reputable letting agents
  • Consider, if possible, looking for accommodation with someone you are familiar with
  • Consider your budget – factor in costs for utilities (gas, electricity, water) as well as internet services and, possibly transport costs
  • Check your contract, including length of tenancy and deposit requirements
  • Inspect before you commit to renting, consider such things such as condition, security, fire safety and what furniture and appliances may be included.
