Industry Placements

Employers shaping future careers

Industry placements give students the opportunity to apply their learning in a real workplace, developing the practical skills and confidence employers value. By offering an industry placement, you can help shape the future workforce while bringing fresh perspectives and enthusiasm into your organisation.

Each year, we successfully place thousands of students with local and regional employers, helping them gain meaningful experience and explore future career opportunities. Many of our students go on to full-time employment or apprenticeships after their placement, demonstrating the real value of these opportunities. Whether you're a sole trader, small business or large organisation, your support can make a real difference.

If you're interested in offering a placement or supporting our students, we'd love to hear from you at workexperience@southessex.ac.uk

What’s involved in hosting a placement?

Your dedicated Industry Placement Officer will guide you through the process and help find a student who is the right fit for your business.

Students are matched with employers in the industry they are training for, giving them the opportunity to develop relevant skills and gain practical, hands-on experience in a real working environment. There is no financial contribution to offering an industry placement.

Placement hours vary depending on the course and qualification, ranging from 36 to 750 hours over one or two academic years.

Students submit their placement details, which allows us to carry out the necessary checks, including health and safety compliance. Once all requirements have been met, the placement can be approved.

We manage placements through a system called GroFar. There's no need to create an account or learn a new platform, everything is handled through straightforward automated emails.

Throughout their placement, students record their hours through GroFar. You will receive a weekly automated email with a simple link to confirm attendance, making the process quick and hassle-free.

Industry placements give learners valuable experience in a real working environment, helping them develop practical skills and prepare for their future careers. Placement requirements vary by course, with learners completing between 36 and 250 hours of work-based learning supported by our college throughout the process.

Industry placements are a mandatory part of every T Level programme and are designed to provide substantial industry experience. T Levels are gradually being rolled out to colleges across the UK and are the equivalent to 3 A-Levels. Depending on the course, learners will complete between 315 and 750 hours with their employer, enabling them to build the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to successfully transition into employment.

T Level industry placements require some additional documentation, but our team will support you through the process every step of the way.

At the end of the placement, we will ask you to complete a short feedback form to help evaluate the student's progress, skills development and overall experience.

How can I prepare?

We will guide you through everything you need to know, ensuring you are fully prepared to provide a successful placement experience.

We will work with you to ensure your workplace provides a safe and suitable environment for students aged 16 to 19, including conducting a health and safety check before the placement begins.

You are required to hold valid Employer's Liability Insurance and provide a copy of your certificate before the placement begins.
