A highly motivated learner with exceptional technical ability
Jude Lea has been an outstanding IT student over the past two years, consistently demonstrating independence, resilience, and a genuine passion for technology. His reliability and proactive approach to learning have set him apart, often going beyond classroom expectations by troubleshooting technical issues at home and returning to lessons ready to share his findings. This initiative has strengthened his own understanding while also supporting the wider group, enabling more focused teaching time for other learners.
Advanced technical skills and a drive to explore more
Jude has developed an impressive level of technical skill, particularly in cybersecurity and networking. He has independently built and maintained a home cybersecurity lab, using it to practise ethical hacking techniques and explore complex concepts far beyond the curriculum. His willingness to challenge himself and experiment with advanced tools marks him out as a highly motivated and capable learner.
A supportive and respected member of the class
Jude communicates confidently with his peers and is often seen as a source of encouragement and support. He contributes effectively to group work, presents his ideas clearly, and sets a positive example for others. A standout achievement on the national stage
A defining moment in Jude’s college journey was representing Basildon Town Centre at the WorldSkills UK National Finals 2025 in Wales, where he achieved an impressive 4th place out of approximately 80 competitors. As the first IT student from the college to enter the competition, Jude demonstrated exceptional adaptability, quickly learning and applying new skills under pressure at a national level.
A future focused on cybersecurity
Looking ahead, Jude plans to pursue employment or an apprenticeship in the cybersecurity sector. He is already working towards a professional cybersecurity certification, further strengthening his prospects and demonstrating his commitment to continuous development.
Reflecting on his award, Jude said: “I’m surprised and incredibly happy to win the award! A lot of it is down to the good tutoring. The college is a really good environment for meeting new people and has lots of support from everyone around you. I’m hoping to go into cybersecurity. My advice is to try and make IT your hobby too, it will really help you on your course.”
Jude’s dedication, technical ability, and ambition make him a truly deserving IT Student of the Year and an excellent ambassador for the college.
Jude's achievements reflect not only his impressive technical skills but also his resilience, ambition and commitment to continuous improvement. From developing advanced cybersecurity knowledge outside of the classroom to representing the college at the WorldSkills UK National Finals, he has consistently challenged himself to go further and achieve more. His success demonstrates what can be accomplished through hard work, curiosity and a genuine passion for technology. We are incredibly proud of everything Jude has achieved and look forward to seeing him continue to thrive as he pursues a future in the cybersecurity industry.
