Level 4 Higher National Certificate: Foundation Excellence (Year 1)

The Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Digital Technologies for England will develop foundational knowledge and practical skills across core digital technology areas. The programme introduces students to professional practice in the digital economy, where they will explore the evolution and impact of digital technologies on work environments and examine the importance of professional development for career success. Students will gain comprehensive understanding of innovation and digital transformation, learning to explain the underlying context for digital innovation and market disruption that leads to business transformation, while exploring different types of digital transformation and their requirements for successful implementation.

Level 5 Higher National Diploma: Advanced Professional Development (Year 2)

The Level 5 builds upon Level 4 foundations to develop advanced specialist knowledge and professional competencies. Students will advance their understanding of business intelligence, learning to discuss business processes and mechanisms that support decision-making, compare tools and technologies associated with business intelligence functionality, and demonstrate sophisticated use of business intelligence tools while evaluating their impact on effective decision-making. Internet of Things (IoT) concepts are explored in depth, with students analysing necessary IoT aspects for software application design, outlining plans for appropriate IoT applications, and developing functional IoT applications using various hardware, software, data, platforms and services.

Emerging technologies form a crucial component of Level 5 study, where students review which emerging technologies are appropriate for future software applications, research specific emerging technologies and their impacts on end-user groups and develop multiple iterations of emerging technology solutions. Throughout the programme, students engage with work-based learning opportunities in the digital economy, exploring different working environments and cultures, preparing comprehensive learning and development plans, and reflecting on skills and knowledge development to plan for future career progression. The Level 5 qualification emphasises critical evaluation, strategic thinking, and the application of advanced digital technologies in professional contexts.

Entry Requirements

  • You will also need to hold a Level 3 qualification, including but not limited to: A-Levels, an Access to Higher Education Diploma, BTEC and other related Level 3 qualifications

or

  • an international equivalent to the above qualification

If English is not your first language, you are required to have the following English language proficiency standards (or an approved equivalent for this qualification): IELTS Academic 6.0 minimum 5.5 across all components.

Assessment & Feedback

There are no external exams included in this study programme, instead, you will complete several written assignments.

NB: You have one year from starting to complete the relevant Level (either 4 or 5).

The curriculum is set up to support a portfolio approach to continuous assessment. Learners will study modules and develop a portfolio of evidence. Each module will have milestones where formative assessment is provided, and learners can then continue to work on their portfolios before a final submission at the end of the module.

This allows you to apply for a government loan to cover 100% of your tuition fees, with nothing to pay upfront. You may also be eligible for a maintenance loan. Repayments begin only after you finish your studies and once your annual income exceeds £25,000.
