Course Overview

The Creative Media Production (Television and Film Production) Level 3 Extended Diploma is designed for learners who want to develop practical skills for a career in television, film and digital media production. It suits creative learners who enjoy storytelling, teamwork and hands‑on work, and who are interested in how media content is planned, produced and presented across a range of genres and platforms. 

Throughout the course, learners develop technical and creative skills using industry‑standard equipment and software. They learn how to plan, shoot and edit their own television and film products, gaining experience in areas such as camera work, lighting, sound recording and post‑production. Practical learning is delivered through a wide range of project‑based assignments, including music videos, advertising content, live television shows, podcasts, documentaries and short films, as well as independently planned productions. 

Learners also gain experience working in different production environments, including the live television studio, radio studio and on location. Alongside practical production skills, the course develops an understanding of media theory, scriptwriting and production planning, helping learners understand how creative decisions are made and managed within professional media contexts. This balance of theory and practice reflects how the industry operates and supports learners in building confidence and professionalism. 

The course includes opportunities to take part in relevant work experience, live projects and collaborations with external clients, helping learners understand real industry expectations. Learners may also take part in industry‑related trips and events, and showcase their work in a final end‑of‑year show. By the end of the course, learners will have developed a strong portfolio and the skills needed to progress to higher education or employment within television, film or wider media production, with a clear understanding of the demands and opportunities of the creative industries.

To study this course will will require a Level 2 qualification or GCSEs x 4 at grade 4/C - one to be grade 4/C in ENGLISH OR MATHS. You will also be asked to provide evidence of your ability in the subject which could be in the form of a portfolio as well as having successful attendance at interview event.
You will be assessed through a range of activities including practical tasks and written material.

This course is free to UK learners under 19 who are not in employment.

Students progress either into employment or on to university level education, including our BA (Hons)Film Production at the University Centre South Essex.
