When Meckeala first enrolled on an Access course following her return to the UK from Spain, she had not imagined that she would go on to achieve a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration. Originally intending to pursue Fine Art, a last-minute decision led her to explore a different creative path, one that would challenge her, inspire her and ultimately transform her future.
As a mature student, Meckeala approached every aspect of university life with exceptional dedication, professionalism and determination. Arriving with limited digital design experience, she embraced the opportunity to develop new skills and pushed herself outside of her comfort zone. With the support of her lecturers and the encouragement of her classmates, she grew in confidence and flourished both creatively and academically.
Throughout her studies, Meckeala became a valued member of the student community, known for her positivity, generosity and willingness to support those around her. Her cohort developed a close bond, creating friendships that extended far beyond the classroom and became one of the most treasured aspects of her university experience.
During her second year, Meckeala faced the heartbreaking loss of her mother. Despite this significant personal challenge, she demonstrated remarkable resilience, strength and perseverance, continuing her studies while drawing on the support of her lecturers and peers. Her determination was rewarded when she graduated with a First-Class Honours degree, a reflection of her hard work, talent and commitment.
Looking ahead, Meckeala hopes to build a successful creative business of her own, with ambitions to see her designs featured in well-known retailers such as Oliver Bonas or Anthropologie. Her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for creativity continue to drive her forward as she begins the next chapter of her career.
Reflecting on her time at UCSE, Meckeala said:
"I went into the course with no digital skills, but the lecturers gave me so much time and support. The small class sizes made such a difference and I've made friends for life. When my mum passed away, I was supported every step of the way. I achieved a First, which I'm incredibly proud of, and I would absolutely recommend UCSE to anyone looking for a supportive and welcoming university experience."
As she celebrates her graduation, Meckeala reflects on her achievements with both pride and emotion. Her journey demonstrates the power of resilience, determination and embracing new opportunities. Through talent, dedication and perseverance, she has overcome challenges, achieved academic success and built a strong foundation for an exciting future in the creative industries.
Meckeala’s story demonstrates how resilience, determination and the courage to embrace new opportunities can lead to outstanding achievements. Returning to education as a mature student, she developed her creative and technical skills through her Graphic Design and Illustration degree, ultimately graduating with First-Class Honours.
